When Shiva, the son of Baahubali, learns about his heritage, he begins to look for answers. His story s juxtaposed with past events that unfolded in the Mahismati Kingdom.
Prabhas was cast as main lead of the film. Anushka Shetty was cast as the heroine of the film as she was also a part of  Mirchi. She coincidentally became the first heroine Rajamouli repeated in his films and thus made her schedules full for 2013 and 2014.
